"WE ARE ALL DANGEROUS UNTIL OUR FEARS GROW THOUGHTFUL."

THE SECOND (LAST) OKAY THING TO HAVE EVER INVOLVED THE WORD "WHITTIER":
"This performance by the art collective Asco took place on the same street that violent rioting between Chicano anti-war protestors and the police had taken place. Pictured: Patssi Valdez, Humberto Sandoval, Willie Herron III and Gronk. Photo: Harry Gamboa, Jr. Courtesy the artists."

Caught this yesterday:
Howard Fried, INSIDE THE HARLEQUIN: APPROACH AVOIDANCE III AND II

"From the start of the 1970s, Howard Fried put forward one of the most compelling bodies of conceptual film and video work. The artist belongs to a generation that radically redefined sculpture and questioned the role and form of art in society. A leading figure on the West Coast in the intertwined fields of performance, video, and installation art as they emerged, he was also one of the key advocates of these mediums in founding the New Genres department at the San Francisco Art Institute in that era. Exploring his own psychology as a point of departure, his abject sculptural and performance-based works investigated more broadly the problems and processes of how we perceive and learn information. The paradox of choice was central to his study of scenarios in which individuals are faced with competing options: from the routine of ordering food in a restaurant to the rhetoric of political television advertising. His meticulously crafted works probe issues of criteria, judgment, control, and predictability in analyzing how people deal with conflict situations and group power dynamics. "

Deborah Stratman, IN ORDER NOT TO BE HERE, 2002
"An uncompromising look at the ways privacy, safety, convenience and surveillance determine our environment. Shot entirely at night, the film confronts the hermetic nature of white-collar communities, dissecting the fear behind contemporary suburban design. An isolation-based fear (protect us from people not like us). A fear of irregularity (eat at McDonalds, you know what to expect). A fear of thought (turn on the television). A fear of self (don’t stop moving). By examining evacuated suburban and corporate landscapes, the film reveals a peculiarly 21st century hollowness… an emptiness born of our collective faith in safety and technology. This is a new genre of horror movie, attempting suburban locations as states of mind."

Jeffrey Shaw, REVOLUTION

"In this interactive laserdisk-based work the viewer has to push a protruding stell bar to rotate a columnmounted monitor which in turn animates the images on ist screen. A friction plate forces the viewers to make a strong physical effort. Turning the monitor in one direction, the viewer rotates a virtual millstone and grinds grain into flour. Pushing it in the other direction, he interactively moves through a large number of images that illustrate many of the major social uprisings and revolutions over the last 200 years worldwide. These images—all originally created for ‹An Imaginary Museum of Revolutions (1987–89)—are digitally processed collages made from documentary photographic sources."

the most brilliant thing we've never seen*: ANATHEMA, from THE OTOLITH GROUP:

"Anathema is a (1) science fiction-based idea in which the microscopic behaviour of liquid crystals (2) subjected to turbulence is understood as a conductive medium and a sentient entity which operates in and through the LCD screens that constitute the mediascape of contemporary communicative capitalism. Anathema can be understood as an object-oriented video that isolates (3) magical audiovisual gestures in worlds made possible by dream factory capitalism. In bringing the (4) telecommunication couplings of mother-father-daughter-son-machines and boyfriend-girlfriend-objects into contact (5) through the turbulence of liquid crystals, Anathema is gathering (6) the ingredients for a spell that (7) can counter the occult economy of capitalist sorcery on its own terms."
